Rule 48 - This being the final post of 2009, I thought it would be fitting to discuss an annual event that is held on this very night…New Years Eve.  For many, tonight is an evening of sharing an intimate dinner with your partner and attending parties together.  Sure this is great for all the folks who have found that special someone…but what about all those single people out there?  Some of you may be tempted to just stay home…don’t.  New Years Eve is like the Super Bowl of going out for three primary reasons.

  1. Overhyped - Is there a more overhyped night for going out on the town all year long?  I think not. Restaurants all over try to get you to eat there and bars try to entice you with drink specials and late night buffets, etc.  The week leading up to NYE is just as commercialized as the week leading up to the Super Bowl.

  2. Overpriced - Nothing like going out to eat at a restaurant that is charging you three times what it would cost to eat there any other night of the year…not unlike Super Bowl tickets.

  3. Game Clock - When you are single and out cruising the bars/parties think of it the same way you would any night except for one primary difference…there is a game clock.  Unlike most nights when you can casually take your time on talking with folks and narrowing down your choice of who to hit on, New Years Eve adds that new element of time…yep…the stroke of midnight.  This means you have to get there, take down a couple confidence drinks, and get right to work on moving that ball down the field to score that touchdown kiss at midnight.  Once you have that groundwork laid and get that all important kiss…then you can casually party with your new companion for a little while longer then retire to someplace a little more…quiet.

Sure all of this mess ads a little complexity to the evening, but embrace the Super Bowl…er…New Years Eve hype and rush out onto the field.  Even you single folks out there that are dreading getting suited up, don’t be all glum.  All of the other single people are in the exact same stadium and on the exact same field as you are right now.  Take comfort in that you are all in this together and whatever you do don’t sit at home tonight.  No matter how bad a time you wind up having trying to score that touchdown out somewhere…it will still be more fun than sitting at home alone.  And who knows, tonight could be the night you meet someone really great…which would really ad a level of awesomeness to the start of your new year.

Happy New Year everyone and thanks for reading.  Stay awesome my friends.

New Years Eve is the Super Bowl of going out.
